UTB Food Science Students Explore Logistics and Food Security at Muara Port Company
Thursday, 23 October 2025. A group of 11 third-year students from the Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology programme at the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), visited Muara Port Company Sdn Bhd (MPC). The objective of the visit is to help the students learn how the food supply chain works in real time by seeing the operations at the port.
The visit was led by Dr. Namasivayam Navaranjan, Senior Assistant Professor and Dean of the School of Applied Sciences and Mathematics. The group was warmly welcomed by Puan Hjh Azian Hj Mohammad, Manager of Human Resources and Corporate Communications at MPC, who delivered opening remarks and shared insights into the port’s pivotal role in Brunei’s economy and logistics sector.
The student delegation began their tour at MPC headquarters, where they received an overview of the company’s operations. They then proceeded to the Conventional Terminal warehouse to observe a nitrogen machine used in rice storage, a technology that preserves grain quality by replacing oxygen with nitrogen to prevent spoilage and pest infestation. Later the group visited the export oriented facility of Muara International Fish Landing Sdn Bhd (MIFL) to learn about cold-chain logistics and the fishery industry, one of MPC’s key growth areas. The visit concluded back at MPC headquarters with the presentation of a token of appreciation and a group photo session.
MPC welcomes collaborations with universities such as UTB to foster learning experiences that go beyond theory, offering hands-on exposure to operational, logistical, and food security contexts. The company reaffirmed its commitment to workforce development and active engagement with educational institutions.
